2008.1 is the rank of the newest edition of Mandriva linux available for download. Since a few days, ISO images for the free edition of Mandriva linux distribution are available for download. ISO images available are 3 CDROMS, one DVD, or some iso flavored with your favourite desktop manager prepared for painless intallation. You also can download mini distributions for minimal install to be run on USB keys live distribution for example.Amongst notable and interesting novelties available with this distribution is native and transparent support for NTFS file system with read AND write capacities (through ntfs-3g module driver), of extreme interest for people running dual or triple boot stations equipped with Windows Vista or XP. Product stability seems correct, most components are in stable release at first glance. Notable black points are the Cups printer driver for USB printers, still experiencing great difficulties since the latest version (see here ) in doing its job. On an other hand on our test computer already equipped with 2008.0 version, the update to the latest versioon was not made possible despite all precautions taken. Another difficulty is the bootloader (GRUB in our case) that gives error on every boot, making it exremely unpleasant to start. We notice that previous version (2008.0) already did experience some booting difficulties Furthermore, although package update works fine (thanks god), package install by rpmdrake program always causes errors making it impossible to install any pack after distrib install without passing by command line solutions. We guess that these problems above will be shortly corrected via the package update system and that they are caused by the extreme youth of the product. Never will we forget that this is a free product made available for free download by a commercial company mainly composed of free software. find a version of Mandriva linux suitable to your needs on Mandriva website at http://www.mandriva.com using GRUB |
